You are wise to be cautious with this passage, I agree...I wonder if this 'sending forth' (NIV) is of the same vein as 'God sent his Son'?
Like Jesus was sent to establish the order/reason/wisdom/logos of Creation. This would expand Colossians 1:15-19, a bit.
