It was the first warm day since the Winter, and the children were excited to play outside. It was the Day of Rest, so Adam did not go to the fields to work. He stayed at home.
Eve sat in the kitchen exhausted. For the first time since the days began to lengthen, she was alone. She breathed out a long sigh, as though she was exhaling all the troubles of the World.
Adam walked into the kitchen. He had checked the children were playing safely next to the house. Many spirits roamed the land. They had a habit of tempting and misleading the children. They rarely came up to the house, in case they were spotted, but Adam still needed to be cautious.
He saw how tired his wife was and brewed her a cup of tea. He put the cup on the table, pulled up a chair and sat next to her. He held out his hand, reaching to hold her’s. She obliged.
She caressed and rolled his hand within hers. Intently, she looked at his scars. She traced them with her fingers. She looked at the callouses formed by the rough tools. The brutal hard work caused by the Curse was written into his palms.
She looked up into his face. And he looked deeply into her eyes. Even after centuries together, he was infatuated with her.
He brought his forehead to rest on hers. They breathed in the same air. She was flesh of his flesh and bone of his bone. They were one at the beginning and they were again as one in this moment. Together.
She began to cry. The memory of Paradise overwhelmed her. All they had lost came rushing back into her heart. This whole situation was all due to their foolishness.
Adam embraced her. He draw her close to Him. Her tears drying on his tunic made from animal skins.
When Eve stopped crying, Adam knelt down and kissed her pregnant tummy. New life was soon to enter their household. Eve smiled through the tears and almost laughed with joy.
They had lost so much, but they were blessed by so much too.
Abel, their second eldest, ran into the kitchen. He had heard his mother’s tears as though each one was crying out individually. His boyish smile enchanted both his parents. They smiled in return.
Adam stood, pulling Eve up from the chair. He beckoned Abel to join them. He rushed into his father’s arms and they all embraced.
Then Adam whispered into Eve’s ear, ‘This is love’.
[On this St Valentines Day, I’m dedicating this post to my beautiful wife.
She is my Eve.]
A beautiful, melancholic story thanks for writing this mon ami, you've a real gift for capturing feeling and sentimentality in your writing.
That was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes.
To feel love like that would make all the world's pains worth it.
