In my last post, I looked at the phrase ‘King of Kings’, but how does the title ‘Lord of Lords’ differ?
In Revelation, Christ is referred to as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords
Revelation 19 v 16
On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
King of Kings and Lord of Lords
I would say that the King of Kings relates to earthly kingdoms. While the Lord of Lords is more concerned with the spiritual realm.
Again, in the Book of Revelation, we see St John write to the angels of the Seven Churches.
Revelation 2 v 1
To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.
The angel is the spiritual lord over a particular church. There are spiritual lords or rulers over other physical hierarchies, like nation, institutions and organisations.
A Christian is called not to fight against flesh and blood, but against the evil spiritual entities or lords.
Ephesians 6 v 12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
There are ruling spiritual entities which are part of God’s Kingdom too, these include the angels.
Christ is the Lord of Lords, which means he rules over all these spiritual entities. But as we see kings (presidents/prime ministers) today who rebel against the rule of Christ, equally there are evil spiritual entities which rule over communities and institutions who do not recognise Him.
But God will bring judgement against these lords. We see this mentioned in 2 Peter
2 Peter 2 v 4
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;
And in Exodus we see God judge the gods of Egypt.
Exodus 12 v 12
On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.
God will bring His judgement against these demonic rulers in His own time. So we must trust our Lord and in His plans.
Christ is Lord!
This day...be thou my compass Lord Jesus
